The new Employer Accredited Work Visa which was going to be introduced from 1 November 2021 has been delayed until the middle of 2022as per the announcement made by Immigration New Zealand last month.
The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), which was announced in 2019, would replace six different visas with a single, streamlined visa process. To hire a migrant on the new Accredited Employer Work Visa, employers must be accredited.
The new system is intended to support a future economy that relies less on lower-paid temporary workers, better addresses productivity, skills & infrastructure challenges, and improves migrants' skill levels.
By simplifying the visa application process and removing or streamlining labour market tests for higher-paid roles, the new system will make it easier for businesses and regions to fill genuine skills shortages. It will provide migrants with more assurance regarding the visa process and the job for which they are coming to New Zealand.
Employers were initially to be able to apply for accreditation from late September, just in time for the new visa's rollout on November 1, 2021. However, this has been put on hold for now.
The new accreditation standards will require employers to show they:
- are a legitimately operating business, including having an Inland Revenue registration and a New Zealand Business Number (NZBN),
- are having no recent history of regulatory non-compliance with immigration or employment regulations, and
- will take steps to reduce the risk of exploitation by completing employment modules, giving migrant employees advice on their rights, and paying all recruitment costs both inside and outside of New Zealand.
