Essential Skills Work Visas are intended to assist New Zealand in developing a highly-skilled workforce, high-quality employment and workplaces, and high-value industries. Essential Skills Work Visas are only issued if:
- the employment is acceptable; and
- there are no New Zealand citizens or residents who are suitable for the position; and
- both the employer and the applicant meet the requirements.
Based on your salary, you may be able to support temporar
y visas for family members. Salary is divided into two categories: those paid at or above the median wage and those paid below the median wage.
Before approving an Essential Skills Work Visa, an immigration officer must be satisfied that no New Zealanders are available to do the job. Companies are often expected to advertise job openings online and make a real effort to hire a local candidate to prove this. In most cases, the extent and nature of advertising or other relevant recruitment methods would imply:
- if appropriate, listing the vacancy with Work and Income
- using the services of a recruitment company that is familiar with the industry
- posting the job opening in a national newspaper and/or on the online
If none of these options work and the employer has no other choice except to hire a visa holder, they can offer the job and submit an Employer Supplementary Form with the work visa application.
An Essential Skills work visa may be issued for the duration of the employment offer, up to a maximum of:
- three years for employment paid at or above the NZ median wage; or
- three years for employment with an accredited labor hire company; or
- six months for lower-skilled employment, where the application is made between July 10, 2020, and January 10, 2022, inclusive, unless a six-month visa would result in the holder exceeding the three-year maximum period holding Essential Skills visas for lower-skilled employment; or
- one year for employment paying less than the median wage, unless a one-year visa would result in the holder exceeding the three-year maximum period allowed under, where the application is made from January 11, 2022; or
- six months or one year if the applicant meets the requirements for people also applying for a resident visa under the Skilled Migrant Category.
