If you are the partner of a New Zealand resident or citizen, the visa is for you. After that, you can live in New Zealand forever. If you are granted residence, you will be allowed to live, work & study in New Zealand indefinitely. You can also include your dependent children in your visa application, who are single & aged 24 & less. However, children aged 21 to 24 must be dependent on an adult for financial assistance.
If your spouse is a New Zealand resident because of their citizenship or residence status in Australia, they must be living in New Zealand.
Your spouse must be eligible to support your resident visa application & must complete a 'Partnership support form for Residence/temporary entry' as proof of their support.
You must also provide evidence that you & your partner have been living together for at least 12 months in a genuine & stable relationship. Since the principal applicant & their New Zealand partner are responsible for proving that the relationship on which the application is based is genuine & stable, the maximum possible must submit upfront. If an Immigration New Zealand officer concludes after reviewing an application that the couple is in a legitimate & stable relationship, but the span of that relationship is less than the mandatory 12 months, they may defer the final decision to enable the qualifying period to be met & grant a work visa in the interim.
You could be eligible for a Permanent Resident Visa if your partner is a New Zealand citizen & the two of you have been living together outside of New Zealand for at least five years. When you apply, your partner must be overseas or have been back in New Zealand for less than three months. Before making travel arrangements, it's a good idea to check the latest immigration advice NZ regarding travel on the INZ website.
